Introduction
Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has rapidly emerged as one of the most transformative technologies of the last decade. Its ability to create text, images, video, and music has fundamentally changed how people produce, share, and consume digital content. Nowhere is this shown more than on social media such as TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and X (formerly Twitter), where AI-driven algorithms not only determine which content users see but also assist in generating the content itself. These innovations have reshaped user engagement, creativity, and even societal norms, raising pressing questions about authens1ticity, safety, and ethics in digital spaces.
Social media platforms relied primarily on human-generated content curated through relatively simple algorithms. Early platforms like Facebook focused on chronological content delivery, while later developments recommended systems that leveraged user behavior to prioritize engagement. In recent years, the rise of generative AI has accelerated this transformation. According to Sahin Ahmed in 2024, over 90% of all online content you see is determined by an algorithm demonstrating AI’s deep integration into digital life (Ahmed,2024). Moreover, AI-driven personalization has created hyper-engaged user bases, increasing average time spent on platforms while amplifying both opportunities and risks (Kong, Ouellette, & Murthy, 2024). The widespread adoption of generative AI across global platforms has impacts not only on content creation but also, for legal frameworks, social behavior, and cybersecurity.
As AI becomes central to social media, it enables new forms of creativity, facilitates unprecedented personalization, and streamlines digital communication. However, it also introduces challenges, such as the potential spread of misinformation, ethical dilemmas, privacy risks, and security vulnerabilities. This paper examines generative AI’s impact on social media by exploring its technological foundations, applications, benefits, and associated legal, ethical, social, and security concerns. Additionally, it considers the ways in which AI can be responsibly integrated to promote positive societal outcomes while reducing risks.
Technology Overview: Generative AI in Social Media
Genai consists of a diverse set of machine learning models capable of producing original content from user inputs. Among the most widely used are large language models, generative adversarial networks, and diffusion models. LLMs are designed to generate properly written and context relevant text, which can include captions, social media posts, comments, and automated scripts for video or audio content. These models are particularly useful for generating natural language responses and creative writing, enabling both casual users and professional creators to produce high-quality text efficiently. GANs, on the other hand, are designed to create realistic images and video content by pitting two neural networks against each other. A generator produces content, while a discriminator evaluates its authenticity. Diffusion models take a slightly different approach, generating highly detailed images from simple textual prompts, allowing users to create professional-quality visuals, animations, and video clips with minimal technical expertise. Together, these AI technologies enable unprecedented levels of creativity, personalization, and automation in the digital landscape (Hwang & Lee, 2025) and (Sapien, 2024).
Social media platforms have increasingly added generative AI to enhance both content creation and user engagement. This level of personal addition ensures that users are more likely to engage with content that aligns with their preferences, increasing platform engagement and user satisfaction. Instagram for example leverages AI to suggest relevant hashtags, curate posts, and identify content that may violate community guidelines, allowing users to discover trending topics while ensuring adherence to platform standards. This example illustrates how generative AI has become central not only to producing content but also to optimizing its distribution and consumption (Kong et al., 2024).
Emerging AI tools are further democratizing content creation by reducing the technical barriers for users. OpenAI’s allow users to create detailed images from textual prompts, while other platforms enable creators to generate animated videos, enhanced visual effects, and multimedia content with minimal expertise. These tools warrant both amateur and professional creators to experiment with innovative storytelling techniques, visual aesthetics, and interactive media, fostering a more inclusive and accessible creative environment (Kong et al., 2024). The widespread availability of such tools has also allowed for creative industries, marketing campaigns, and influencer-driven tasks. This allows smaller creators and brands to compete with larger entities.
In addition to content generation, generative AI plays a crucial role in moderation and safety systems. Machine learning algorithms monitor posts in real time, identifying offensive material, harmful misinformation, or trends that violate platform policies (Kong et al., 2024; Appel, 2024). By automating moderation, platforms can respond to emerging issues more quickly than human reviewers alone, reducing the spread of harmful content while maintaining a safer online environment (Kong et al., 2024; Appel, 2024). AI also enables predictive trend analysis, helping creators anticipate viral topics and optimize their posting strategies (Hwang & Lee, 2025; Kong et al., 2024). This can than influence content visibility, engagement rates, and community participation.
Furthermore, AI facilitates the personalization of user experiences by analyzing patterns in behavior, preferences, and engagement (Hwang & Lee, 2025; Kong, Ouellette, & Murthy, 2024). This is important because it allows people to almost be able to customize/ personalize the experience on social media since it is entirely up to their engagement. This not only increases user satisfaction but also contributes to the addictive nature of social media, highlighting the dual edge of AI’s influence on digital consumption (Hwang & Lee, 2025; Li, 2023). Overall, generative AI has become a cornerstone of modern social media infrastructure, transforming content creation, moderation, and distribution while reshaping the ways users interact with digital platforms and each other. Its integration represents a fundamental shift in the social media ecosystem, illustrating both the power and complexity of AI-driven technologies in everyday digital life (Hwang & Lee, 2025; Kong et al., 2024; Li, 2023).
Impact on Content Creation
Generative artificial intelligence has profoundly transformed digital creativity by enabling collaboration between humans and machines, fundamentally altering the way content is produced, shared, and monetized. Hwang and Lee (2025) emphasize the importance of “prompt literacy,” which refers to the skill of effectively instructing AI systems to produce desired outputs. This ability not only enhances creative efficiency but also allows users to experiment with new forms of storytelling, multimedia production, and digital design. Even creators with limited technical expertise can leverage AI to generate visually striking images, engaging video content, or compelling written narratives (Kong, Ouellette, & Murthy, 2024). By automating repetitive tasks and providing creative suggestions, AI accelerates workflows, increases the quality of outputs, and allows creators to focus on higher-order decision-making. This allows for experimentation and refinement. This democratization of creativity ensures that both amateur and professional users can compete on more equal footing, fostering innovation and broadening participation in digital media creation (Hwang & Lee, 2025).
However, the widespread adoption of AI in content creation introduces significant challenges. One major concern is the homogenization of content. As creators increasingly rely on AI-generated templates, styles, and suggestions, there is a risk that content across social media platforms may become repetitive, formulaic, or derivative (Hwang & Lee, 2025). This can reduce the diversity of creative expression and limit opportunities for truly original ideas to emerge. Moreover, dependence on AI may diminish human creative agency, as creators begin to rely more on automated suggestions than on personal experimentation and intuition (Hwang & Lee, 2025). Over time, this could erode the role of human complexity in digital media, making creativity partially algorithm-driven rather than individually inspired which is where creativity sparks from.
The rise of AI-generated content also raises complex questions about intellectual property (IP) and ownership. Many generative models are trained on large datasets that include copyrighted material, and this can create a grey area over who owns the rights to the resulting works (Appel, 2024). If AI-generated content becomes commercialized or viral, disputes may arise between platforms, creators, and developers over licensing, royalties, and legal accountability. These unresolved legal issues complicate monetization and highlight the need for updated IP frameworks that reflect the unique characteristics of AI-assisted creation.
Monetization itself is further complicated by the growing use of AI in influencer marketing and content campaigns. Platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube increasingly integrate AI to optimize viral content, recommend trending topics, and even create entire virtual influencer personas (Hwang & Lee, 2025; Kong et al., 2024). These AI-generated personas often appear identical to human creators, raising ethical and economic questions about transparency and authenticity (Appel, 2024). Revenue-sharing models must account for the contributions of both human creativity and algorithmic assistance, a challenge that platforms are only beginning to address.
Real-world examples illustrate the benefits and risks of AI-driven content creation. TikTok campaigns using AI-generated captions, music, or video sequences often achieve rapid virality, increasing engagement metrics and brand visibility (Hwang & Lee, 2025; Kong et al., 2024). Yet, these campaigns may inadvertently promote repetitive trends, reduce originality, and create over-reliance on algorithmic optimization (Hwang & Lee, 2025). This is because AI cannot critically think for itself. Additionally, the integration of AI into professional workflows can inadvertently suppress human creativity, making content more predictable and less reflective of diverse cultural perspectives (Hwang & Lee, 2025). Despite these concerns, the potential for collaboration between human ingenuity and AI tools remains immense, suggesting a future where creators can harness AI to amplify creativity while maintaining ethical standards and originality.
Influence on Misinformation
Generative artificial intelligence has a dual and complex role in shaping the spread of misinformation across social media platforms. On one hand, AI enables the rapid creation of hyper-realistic deepfakes, manipulated images, fabricated articles, and misleading videos that can be disseminated widely with minimal human effort (Schipper, 2025). These capabilities have significant implications for public perception, political stability, and societal trust. During elections in countries such as the Philippines, Taiwan, and India, AI-generated misinformation has been used strategically to influence voter sentiment, amplify divisive narratives, and manipulate public discourse (Schipper, 2025). By producing content that appears authentic, AI can blur the line between fact and fiction, making it increasingly difficult for users to distinguish reliable information from fabricated content. This risk is compounded by the speed and scale at which misinformation can circulate online, allowing false narratives to reach millions of viewers within hours.
Beyond political contexts, AI-generated misinformation presents threats to social cohesion and public safety. False narratives about natural disasters, public health emergencies, or social crises can spread rapidly, causing panic, confusion, and misinformed decision-making (Rogoff, 2023; Schipper, 2025). Schipper (2025) notes that AI-driven misinformation campaigns often exploit emotional triggers, making content more engaging and shareable, which further accelerates its reach. The ease with which generative AI can replicate human writing styles, voices, and visual appearances magnifies the threat, as content may appear to originate from trusted sources even when it does not. Conversely, AI also offers powerful tools to detect, mitigate, and combat misinformation. Fact-checking algorithms, deepfake detection software, and trend-monitoring systems enable platforms to identify manipulated content and alert both moderators and users to potential falsehoods (Rogoff, 2023).
Some AI systems employ natural language processing to flag suspicious claims, while image and video recognition algorithms detect inconsistencies or alterations in multimedia content (Kong, Ouellette, & Murthy, 2024). These technologies provide critical support to human moderators, who alone cannot manage the sheer volume of content uploaded every minute. However, the effectiveness of these AI-driven solutions is uneven, particularly in non-English languages, niche cultural contexts, or regions with limited data resource. False positives and undetected manipulations remain significant challenges, highlighting the need for complementary human oversight and nuanced judgment.
The public health domain exemplifies both the risks and benefits of AI in misinformation management. During global health crises, generative AI can be leveraged to monitor social media activity for false claims about vaccines, treatments, or health policies (Kong et al., 2024). Platforms can then flag or remove harmful content, provide corrective messaging, and disseminate evidence-based information, reducing the influence of misinformation on public behavior (Kong et al., 2024). For example, AI has been used to track anti-vaccination campaigns, analyze sentiment trends, and inform public health interventions, demonstrating its potential to enhance societal well-being when responsibly deployed (Kong et al., 2024). This proves that though AI can have its negative effects it can be monitored. It does have positive impacts in spreading information that can be useful for large amounts of people need to know and be influenced by.
To maximize AI’s benefits while minimizing harm, digital literacy programs and user education are essential. Educating individuals to critically evaluate online content, recognize AI-generated material, and verify sources can complement technological interventions, creating a more resilient digital ecosystem (Rogoff, 2023; Kong et al., 2024). Teaching people how to catch fake information can counteract the negative effects AI may present. The dual nature of AI in misinformation underscores its capacity to both threaten and protect social trust. As generative AI continues to evolve, coordinated strategies involving platforms, regulators, educators, and users will be vital to ensuring that technological advancements support transparency, accuracy, and informed public discourse (Schipper, 2025; Rogoff, 2023; Kong et al., 2024).
Legal, Ethical, and Social Issues
Legal Implications
Generative artificial intelligence introduces complex legal challenges, particularly regarding copyright, content ownership, and platform liability. Traditional intellectual property laws were designed with human creators in mind and often fail to account for AI-generated works, leaving ownership ambiguous (Appel, 2024). For instance, if an AI system creates an image, video, or written work based on a user prompt, it remains unclear whether the rights belong to the user who provided the prompt, the platform hosting the AI, or the developers who created the model. This ambiguity raises potential conflicts over licensing, revenue sharing, and commercial use. Disputes are likely to increase as AI-generated content becomes more widespread, particularly in advertising, entertainment, and publishing sectors. Causing confusion across a plethora of platforms.
Privacy concerns further complicate the legal landscape. Generative AI models are trained on massive datasets, often scraped from publicly available content, which may include copyrighted materials or sensitive personal information (Li, 2023). The use of such data raises questions about consent, data ownership, and compliance with privacy laws. Regulations like the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and California’s Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) impose strict requirements for handling personal data, but AI’s global reach and rapid evolution make compliance challenging (Li, 2023). Platforms must navigate these issues to avoid legal liability for unauthorized use of copyrighted or private content, highlighting the need for updated legislation and international cooperation. This ties in with the idea of plagiarism as well, because using AI to help with outlines and summarization can be useful, it can also cause information used to not properly be cited. This led to legal action as well. The usage of AI should be used with caution due to the risk of portraying someone else’s information as your own.
Ethical Considerations
Beyond legal frameworks, generative AI raises pressing ethical questions. AI systems inherit biases present in their training data, potentially reinforcing stereotypes, amplifying harmful narratives, or marginalizing specific groups (Li, 2023). For example, AI-generated content may unintentionally perpetuate gender, racial, or cultural biases, affecting audience perceptions and societal norms. Ethical deployment requires transparency in model development, diversity in training datasets, and ongoing auditing to detect and mitigate bias. Social media design further complicates ethical considerations. Algorithmically optimized feeds prioritize engagement, often encouraging addictive behaviors, particularly among adolescents and vulnerable populations. Virtual AI influencers, digital personalities generated entirely by AI, blur the line between reality and simulation, raising questions about authenticity, trust, and manipulation (Hwang & Lee, 2025). Audiences may unknowingly interact with content designed to elicit emotional responses or influence decisions, highlighting the need for clear ethical guidelines and informed consent.
Social Implications
Generative AI has far-reaching social implications, influencing culture, politics, and civic engagement. Unequal access to AI tools risks exacerbating digital divides, leaving marginalized populations without resources to fully participate in digital creativity or content-driven economies (Rogoff, 2023). Algorithm-driven content can shape political discourse, amplifying specific narratives and potentially influence elections, public opinion, and societal polarization (Rogoff, 2023). This can cause chaos due to the ability to not be able to tell the difference between AI and true campaign. AI’s ability to rapidly generate and distribute content underscores the importance of digital literacy programs that educate users about verification, source evaluation, and responsible consumption.
Moreover, AI deployment affects cultural production and representation. As AI-generated content becomes all-over dominant cultural perspectives may overshadow minority voices, reducing diversity in digital media. Ethical and social responsibility requires balancing innovation with accountability, ensuring equitable access while preventing harm. Policymakers, developers, and platforms must collaborate to create governance frameworks addressing ownership, privacy, bias, and transparency while fostering inclusive digital environments. The legal, ethical, and social challenges of generative AI are intertwined. Effective management requires comprehensive legislation, ethical standards, and societal engagement. Coordinated efforts among all stakeholders are essential to ensure that AI supports creativity, fairness, and social well-being while minimizing risks (Appel, 2024; Li, 2023; Hwang & Lee, 2025; Rogoff, 2023).
Security Aspects and Challenges
Generative artificial intelligence introduces evolving cybersecurity risks that pose significant challenges for individuals, organizations, and governments. Deepfakes, highly realistic images, videos, or audio recordings, can impersonate public figures, executives, or private individuals, facilitating fraud, political manipulation, or corporate sabotage (Li, 2023; Sapien, 2024). This allows for the defamation of character without proper reasoning. For instance, AI-generated videos may depict political leaders making false statements, influencing public opinion, while deepfake audio can enable financial fraud by mimicking executives’ voices. This harms those who it might affect in not only short-term ways but in long term as well.
AI also lowers the technical barrier for cybercrime through automated phishing, malware generation, and social engineering attacks. AI-powered campaigns craft highly personalized messages that increase the likelihood of success, while AI-generated malware can adapt or evolve to bypass security systems. Mitigation strategies require technological, organizational, and policy-driven approaches. AI-based threat detection systems identify unusual behavior, suspicious communications, or anomalous network activity in real time (Appel, 2024; Sapien, 2024). Content authentication mechanisms, such as digital watermarks or blockchain verification, help distinguish AI-generated media from genuine content. Policies requiring clear labeling of AI-generated material promote transparency and allow users to critically evaluate content, reducing manipulation risks (Appel, 2024).
Collaboration among platforms, cybersecurity experts, regulators, and researchers is essential to address these threats. Public awareness campaigns and digital literacy initiatives educate users about AI risks, how to identify deepfakes, and safe online practices (Sahin, 2024). Courses should be introduced with the increase in the abuse of AI platforms. While AI offers tremendous creative and technological potential, its misuse in cybercrime and misinformation poses serious security challenges. A proactive, coordinated approach that combines technology, ethics, regulation, and user education is essential to protect individuals and society (Li, 2023; Appel, 2024; Sahin, 2024). AI can have many benefits if we continue to keep up with how to prevent the negative.
Applications in Public Health and Social Monitoring
Generative AI has transformative potential in public health by enabling large-scale monitoring, early intervention, and evidence-based decision-making (Kong, Ouellette, & Murthy, 2024; Sapien, 2024). AI can analyze social media to identify harmful content such as tobacco promotions, alcohol advertising to minors, or misleading health claims, allowing authorities to deliver corrective messaging and targeted interventions. AI’s capacity to process vast datasets enables proactive responses to emerging threats rather than reactive measures.
Beyond content moderation, AI can track misinformation about vaccines, treatments, and public health policies. During pandemics, AI models can detect false claims, identify influential sources, and suggest strategies to mitigate harm. Allowing us to simplify the previously extensive process. Similarly, AI can monitor mental health trends, substance abuse, dietary behaviors, and other health-related indicators, informing timely interventions and resource allocation (Kong et al., 2024; Sahin, 2024). This can ultimately contribute to these health-related issues to be caught quickly and allow for rapid/ effective intervention to be made.
The use of AI raises ethical considerations regarding privacy, consent, and data security. Techniques such as data anonymization and aggregation protect individual privacy while allowing actionable insights. Transparency about AI’s role in monitoring and intervention builds public trust. Beyond health, AI supports societal monitoring and policy planning. Platforms can analyze user engagement, sentiment, or emerging concerns to detect crises, anticipate social reactions, and guide responses. AI may identify online harassment patterns, coordinated disinformation campaigns, or early signs of civil unrest, enabling preventive measures and informed decision-making (Sahin, 2024). Generative AI is a powerful tool for public health and societal monitoring. When combined with ethical, legal, and privacy safeguards, it can enhance outcomes, improve policy responses, and foster safer digital communities (Kong et al., 2024; Sapien, 2024).
Conclusion
Overall, generative artificial intelligence is fundamentally reshaping the landscape of social media, influencing content creation, user engagement, and the broader societal ecosystem. As this technology continues to evolve, its impacts are endless, encompassing both significant opportunities and complex challenges. On one hand, Genai democratizes creativity by enabling human-AI collaboration, allowing users with limited technical expertise to produce professional-quality text, images, and videos. By enhancing workflow efficiency, supporting innovative storytelling, and enabling personalized content, AI has lowered barriers to entry and expanded participation across creative industries. The proliferation of AI tools such as LLMs, GANs, and diffusion models demonstrates the power of technology to amplify human ingenuity and foster experimentation in digital media.
However, generative AI also presents profound risks and responsibilities. The technology required to generate hyper-realistic content contributes to misinformation, deepfakes, and disinformation campaigns, which can influence political processes, public opinion, and societal trust. Ethical and legal dilemmas further complicate the landscape, including questions of intellectual property, content ownership, algorithmic bias, privacy, and equitable access. AI’s integration into social media platforms amplifies these challenges by shaping user behavior, influencing engagement patterns, and potentially fostering addictive interactions. Ensuring responsible deployment therefore requires a balance between technological innovation, transparency, and accountability. Developers, platforms, policymakers, and users must collaborate to create governance frameworks, ethical guidelines, and regulatory policies that address these risks while maintaining the benefits of AI-enhanced creativity.
Generative AI also demonstrates substantial potential for positive societal impact, particularly in public health and social monitoring. By analyzing large datasets from social media and other digital platforms, AI can detect harmful content, monitor misinformation trends, and support proactive interventions to safeguard community health. These applications highlight AI’s dual role. It poses risks of manipulation and harm, and it also offers opportunities for enhancing public safety, fostering informed decision-making, and promoting healthier online environments (Kong et al., 2024).
In summary, the dual-edged nature of generative AI underscores the necessity of integrating ethical, legal, and security considerations into its development and deployment. Maximizing AI’s benefits while reducing its risks requires a coordinated, multi-stakeholder approach, combining technological safeguards, regulatory oversight, public education, and human judgment. Future research and policy should focus on ensuring that AI not only empowers creativity and innovation but also strengthens social trust, equity, and digital literacy. By responsibly using generative AI, society can achieve a future where technological progress enhances human potential while maintaining ethical and societal integrity.
